Developing your Entrepreneurial Skill

It’s a rare thing when someone is ‘gifted’ with knowledge or understanding on how to do something.
We have all witnessed the 5-year-old artist, the musical prodigy, or gifted ‘leaders’  Let’s peel back the layer and take a peek. Firstly ‘gifted’ often means a natural aptitude. A skill still needs to be learned, and perhaps someone with a great gift has the ability to learn quickly.  I was chatting with a friend this morning about an article she had read in the guardian about Teachers. The article talked about how great teachers can be developed. That by breaking down in much more detail the qualities or routines that effective [master] teachers use and applied in development and training, more teachers could develop their skills. I feel the same way about business and entrepreneurial skill. We see all the time, great entrepreneurs who often fast tracked to their success. To my mind these [fast tracked] entrepreneurs, learn quickly, break down the skills they need to learn in business, emulate and study the practice of successful peers and then work their butt off to emulate it.

The point is that you can learn to be a great entrepreneur. Don’t believe that you won’t make it or you are not a good leader, or that your not great with numbers. You can LEARN just like successful entrepreneurs did.  Study, mentors, connecting, asking questions, doing actions, taking risks are just some of the ingredients required – a healthy dose of self-belief that your success is there for the taking is also necessary.

My colleague and member Amanda O’Bryan from Creative Queen Bees often talks about creativity being a muscle that you need to develop and exercise. There are people who don’t believe they’re are creative, and many creatives who don’t believe they are entrepreneurs or business people. I personally believe that if you are trading in a business you are creative – it’s a creative in itself to start a business. If you make something with your skill and creativity and then sell it, you are in business.

There are plenty of teachers out there, but great ones can be developed with more development and training, this is exactly the same in business. So who or what are you going to study and learn about today to lift you to greatness?
